Syzygy Leisure Ltd was commissioned by the English Federation of Disability Sport, in conjunction with the Active Sport Partnerships to undertake a unique piece of research in to Young Disabled People and Sport in the East of England.  This research commenced in November 2003 and was concluded in May 2004.

The aims of the research were to:

Propose recommendations to key stakeholders, outlining a vision with clear objectives for the future development of disability sport in the region

Look at the experience of young disabled people in sport both in the community and school environments

bullet

Seek the view of young people, parents, schools facilities and clubs regarding their needs in developing sport

bullet

Examine the development of the competitive structure for disability sport

bullet

Look at the support network for disability sport

bullet

Highlight examples of good practice

During the research we:

Visited 11 schools and interviewed 123 young people with disabilities

bullet

84 people took part in 11 workshops

bullet

633 schools returned questionnaires

bullet

124 clubs representing 27 different sports returned questionnaires

bullet

Spoke to many sports development officers, governing bodies of sport, sports coaches and administrators, teachers, Active Sports staff and others.

We are very grateful to everyone for their contributions which have allowed us to prepare the Regional Report, six County Reports and the Examples of Good Practice.
